Why Losing Weight Together Works

The average American is over-weight. Americans already know they are at risk for heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. They are tired of hearing about it and want to beat the problem. How? Everywhere they turn, there are fast food, fatty, restaurants. One of these fast food meals meets their fat requirements for the day, yet Americans will continue to eat portions that are too large, and food that is too fatty throughout the day.

Americans are not gluttons. They have inherited their like of heavy foods from their ancestral British Empire and European countries, countries they broke away from over two hundred years ago. Unlike the British and Europeans who bicycle, walk, and garden as a way of life, Americans are dependent on their cars. In Europe, shops are close by each other, with sidewalks that meander straight up to the entries of the shops, while Americans often travel long distances to get to stores, work, and back home.

When Americans go out to eat, they are not given smaller portions, like their counterparts in Europe. Americans are handed platters of food fit for cowboys who have been trail blazing for weeks on end, not people who have been sitting at jobs, sitting in cars, and sitting in front of computers and televisions. Americans are seldom offered lighter fares on their menus. If they are, their choices are often humdrum and uninteresting. Who wants to eat low-fat cottage cheese, and tomatoes sprinkled with non-fat croutons at a wedding rehearsal dinner? No one does.

The truth is low fat food is delicious. There are low fat cook books that have great recipes in them. The trick to a successful, low fat , healthier lifestyle is getting the entire family to be involved in the project. Unhealthiness is a family problem, not an individual problem. Eating too much fat, leading to disease, is a family problem, not an individual problem. It is time for families to come together and agree on working towards health together. When families take turns cooking out of low-fat recipe books, when they shop for low fat foods, and commit to lower levels of fat in their diets, they are decreasing problems in their families for generations.

Children in America are becoming fat and sedentary. Childhood diabetes is becoming an epidemic. For this reason, it is logical that schools and communities will jump on the program of low-fat living. In schools, children are being fed french fries, hamburgers, pizza, meatloaf, and desserts that would plug up a cow. Schools will become more accountable to children, and start cooking with lower-fat, healthier ingredients. The federal government will spend money on children by offering them and their families classes, health fairs, and prevention programs, to eliminate the massive heart disease pervading America.

Medical companies will offer enrolled clients programs to help them, such as camps, nutrition and low-fat cooking classes for children and their families. There will be a wrap-around commitment by families, doctors, and communities to offer growing children futures of vibrant health, not agony and pain from clogged arteries, and plugged up heart valves. Families who are starting now, to stop buying processed foods made with unhealthy trans fats, (partially hydrogenated oils), who eat out less, and cook more together, with whole foods and fresh ingredients, are paving the way for their children's health. They know wellness runs in the family.

The world is full of fad diets and, let's face it, none of them work; at least not in the long term. We all know that having a healthy diet is one of the basic keys to weight loss, but how many of us can actually say that we eat as healthily as we should?

I would guess that there are very few of us who can honestly say that deep down we'd rather eat a plate of greens instead of a slice of pizza. The Best Ways to Maximize Your Weight Loss

This will be a three part series where I will be discussing several tips to help you reach your weight loss goals. In the first two articles, I will present tips and tricks to use surrounding your current diet program. In the last article I will focus on tips to help boost your current fitness/exercise program or just help you move more than you currently do.

Here are a few suggestions on how to make some small changes in your current diet program to maximize your weight loss or to break a plateau:

Diet Tips

Cut out salad dressing! But I can't just eat a bunch of vegetables with no dressing! you say. That is impossible. Ok, so I am not saying to put nothing on your salad, I am just saying that we should find alternatives. I used to be so bad with loading on the Ranch that I thought vegetables tasted like Ranch. Now I know vegetables have wonderful, unique flavors of their own. The point is to enhance and not cover up their flavor while saving calories.

One of my favorite dressings is lemon and hot sauce. I love this one because there are no calories added. This is especially good with a salad with meat on it. I would suggest using it on a Shrimp Louie! Another alternative would be just a splash of vinegar. No calories in this one either.

Ok, so some of you are not enjoying either of these choices. Then use one of the salad dressings they offer now that have a spray nozzle. There are some great flavor choices out there and they have a fraction of the calories of regular dressing. Most are about 1 calorie per spray! Wow!

Maybe you are asking why we should find alternatives to the traditional dressing choices. They are loaded with fat and calories. Here is an example of what choosing an alternative dressing can save. The average side salad at a fast food restaurant is 100-150 calories per salad. The dressings they serve usually consist of 2 servings at 200-300 calories per serving. You could save yourself up to 600 calories by opting to forgo the dressing or just make sure you get an extra hour or so on the elliptical machine. It's your choice.

Chew Gum! This is a great trick to use when cooking. I am a taster and somewhere in my subconscious there is this little area that thinks I need to taste what I am cooking every 5 min. I end up eating a whole meal worth of food before my meal..........yeah I don't skip the actual meal because I ate so much during the cooking process so this works really well for me. I save so many calories with this trick!

Don't forget to incorporate free foods. Free foods? What is a free food and why have I not heard about them before!? Ok, so most of you who have been on a diet before, which I am sure includes the majority of us, then you have probably heard of this in the past.

A free food is a food or drink that contains less than 25 calories per serving and 5 grams or less of carbohydrate per serving. There are lots of free foods. A few of these foods include bouillon, broth, consomm?, black coffee, unsweetened or with a sugar substitute, diet soda, sugar free drink mixes, mustard, lemon juice, sugar free gelatin, 1 tablespoon of whipped topping, 2 teaspoons BBQ sauce, 1 teaspoon fat-free cream cheese, 1 ? dill pickles and 1 piece sugar-free hard candy. To find a complete list of free foods just do a quick search on the internet.

My favorite free food dessert is having one of those flavored pre-made sugar free gelatins with a tablespoon of whip topping. Now don't go crazy with the free food but incorporate it when you need it. Everything in moderation.

-Eat soup! You can make some really great low calorie soups that you can keep on hand to use when you want something to eat but you really can't afford too many calories. When I was really concentrating on losing weight, I would make up a batch of soup on Sunday and eat ? to 1 cup servings throughout the week to fight off hunger or what I thought was hunger, you know like a bad day at work. Here is the recipe for the soup I used to make:

Celeste's Sunday Soup

Ingredients:

Non-Stick Cooking Spray

I cup Sliced Carrots

1/3 cup Diced Onion

3-4 Chopped or Minced Garlic Cloves

1 Cup Fresh Green Beans

? Cup Zucchini

? Cup Cut Yellow Squash

? Cup Diced Celery

2 Cups Cut Cabbage

5-6 Cups Low Sodium Broth (chicken, vegetable or beef)

1 ? Tablespoons Tomato Paste

? Teaspoon of Salt

? Teaspoon of Pepper

? Teaspoon Italian Seasoning

1-4 Dashes Hot Sauce (Use your Favorite)

Directions:
Spray a large pot with non-stick cooking spray and saut? the carrot, celery, onion and garlic. Add the garlic toward the end of this process as it really only needs a minute or two in the pan before you continue. Plus putting it over the other vegetables will help to make sure it doesn't burn.

Add the broth, cabbage, green beans, tomato paste and seasonings; bring to a boil

Lower the heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes or until the green beans are tender

Stir in the zucchini and yellow squash and heat for 5-6 minutes

Once cooled, store in the fridge for up to 6 days

Remember to customize the recipe to suit your tastes. I have a friend who modified it to only have green beans, celery, onions, broth and tomato paste because she is way picky. But the point is she modified it and made it work. She has been very successful with her weight loss. Now, remember that ? cup serving of this soup would be considered a free food.

Yogurt is the Perfect Diet Food

Ok, most of you that already lead healthier overall lifestyle than me knew that yogurt could be part of a health diet/weight loss plan, but the yogurt as he perfect diet food? Who would have though that?

So, are we all going to rush out to the grocery store and stock up on yogurt today? I don't know, but if you do there could some terrific benefits for diet attached to consuming yogurt. If you have the discipline to do this, you could literally watch the pounds melt away.

The University of Tennessee conducted a study of overweight people that found that when they ate three servings of yogurt daily, they lost 22% more weight, 61% more body fat and a whopping 81% more abdominal fat over a 12 week period. These results were compared against those of people that ate the same number of calories, but did not consume any dairy as part of their regimen.

Since muscle helps to burn calories, the study shows that by eating a diet high in dairy foods, you will lose more fat, while at the same time protect muscle.

I have saved what I think is the best for last. As part of the healthier lifestyle going on in our home, blueberries have become a big part of this as they are loaded with some sort of health benefit I'm told, just kidding the benefit is, well I uh, hang on I'll ask my wife. All kidding aside, my wife uses blueberries for a variety of purposes , and Cooking Smart for a Healthy Heart from Readers Digest, we came across a great recipe for something I just can't wait to try, probably next summer, but this one is a keeper, Blueberry Yogurt Soup.

You heard me right, Blueberry Yogurt Soup. The ingredients are 3 tbs. of sugar, 1 tsp of grated lemon zest (what the heck is zest?), 1/8 tsp of allspice (not old spice), 2 bags of blueberries (12oz each), 1 1/4 cups of plain low-fat yogurt and 2 tbs. of fresh lemon juice.

There are only three steps to making this into what sounds perfectly delicious to me. First, in a small skillet sugar, lemon zest, allspice and 1 cup water are combined over a medium heat. You bring this to a boil and then cook it for an additional minute to dissolve the sugar.

Next, you place the frozen blueberries, 1 cup of yogurt and lemon juice into a blender or food processor. You then remove the syrup from the heat source and add it to the blender/processor and Puree until smooth.

All that is left is to refrigerate the soup until serving time. Before serving, top off the servings with 1 tablespoon of the remaining yogurt, and voila, you have Blueberry Yogurt Soup for 4.

For example, my favorite food has always been spaghetti. I could eat a box of it by myself every day. I can blame most of my weight gain in my 20's to my diet of spaghetti and not much else. After I started eating high fiber foods, I switched to whole grain spaghetti. I hated it. I switched back and forth for a while. Then I tried a different cooking method. Previously, I had always cooked my pasta separate of my sauce and poor it on top. Now I take my half-cooked spaghetti and finish cooking it in my sauce. It absorbs the flavor of the sauce, and tastes delicious. In addition, no matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to eat a full box of whole grain pasta. It just fills me up too fast.

Similarly, I also altered my pancake recipe when I switched from regular pancake mix. Now I add chopped fruit and nuts to my pancake mix, and my children eat them up when they used to complain and walk away from the table.
